Argentina, the world’s most-populous country, has become a global food market with a thriving cottage industry, a leading wine-and-beer brand and the worlds first domestic vodka brand, the European Union’s top wine regulator said on Friday.

Luxardo Maraischino, an Argentinian-owned company with the largest wine portfolio in the country, said it had reached its targets for production of its flagship Maraschi liqueure.

The new report by the European Commission’s competition department found that it had made “significant progress” in the past two years, including a “significant increase” in imports of wine and liqueures, and an increase in exports of wine from its portfolio.

Liquor imports, which had risen by almost 100% in the last 12 months, increased by almost 200% in a period that stretched over two years.

The EU’s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said: “The report provides the first evidence that in this highly competitive sector the sector can be effectively managed.”

The growth in international wine consumption, combined with the increase in domestic consumption of wines, makes it a very attractive opportunity for the EU and other Member States.

“A major contribution to wine and spirits is the availability of premium quality wines from a wide range of producers.”

I am proud of our strong competitive position in the sector and that we have achieved a significant increase in imports and exports of wines and spirits from the same regions as in the previous year.

“The EU has a wine sector that includes brands including Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pappy Van Winkle and St. Louis Park.

The sector is also worth nearly 2.2 billion euros ($2.7 billion) a year to the European economy, according to industry body the European Wine Federation.
